I have just lost 70 lbs on a fast, doctor supervised diet. I have 40 more to go. Is it okay to have eyelid surgery now?
Dr A’s Answer:
Eyelids tend not to be affected much by weight. The eye socket does contain fat, however, this fat is not programmed to function as calorie storage. The fat serves to “float” your eye in the eye socket allowing for its proper motion. This requires a certain amount of fat, no more, no less. Certainly your overall face shape will change with weight gain/loss and this may affect how you feel about the shape of your eyelids. The lower eyelids will be much more obvious in this respect because the cheek fat may change a lot. In short, you might consider waiting until you are a little closer to your goal weight, but it would not be unreasonable to proceed now, especially if you are only considering upper eyelids.
