What exactly is Botox and how does it work?

Botox stands for “botulinum toxin.” Specifically, it is a type of protein, which is a type of chemical compound. Botox attaches to the inside of the skin where it is injected. Once it attaches to the skin, it blocks signals that tell the skin to contract. If the skin cannot contract, then it cannot wrinkle. When people use Botox for cosmetic purposes, they experience temporary paralysis because the skin cannot move. After awhile, however, the Botox wears away and the skin can move again. Because the Botox naturally wears away, injection is needed again to maintain the results.
