What Does it Mean to be Board-Certified?

It is important that you choose a surgeon who is board certified when you opt to undergo some sort of plastic reconstruction. If you are nervous about the procedure, knowing that your doctor is well-trained and qualified to perform these treatments on your body should help eliminate your fears.

What is the American Board of Facial and Plastic Reconstructive Surgery?

The American Board of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (ABFPRS) is an organization that was established in 1986 as a way to measure and test the qualifications of plastic surgeons within the United States. It was founded with the specific purpose of improving the caliber of these individuals and the work they perform.

When a doctor is considered “board-certified,” it means that he or she has passed a number of hurdles set in place by the ABFPRS that tests his or her qualifications. This set of tasks includes education, training, review, and testing for certification. While the Board makes it quite clear that the certification it provides does not necessarily prove that the doctor is well-trained, he or she does have to go through a series of training exercises and pass a two-day examination prior to being granted official recognition. On top of that, he or she must subscribe to the ABFPRS Code of Ethics, indicating that this individual is of sound moral stance.
