What Causes Wrinkles?

The formation of wrinkles on one’s skin can be alarming and discouraging. Most people tend to associate these skin deformities with aging, since wrinkles do not tend to develop in individuals until later on in their lives. There are many different causes of wrinkles; however, unfortunately, they all are related to aging in some form or fashion. There are steps that one can take to eliminate these wrinkles, but first let’s examine why wrinkles form in the first place.

Wrinkles are a natural formation with the passing of time. As one ages, the junction between two skin layers loses its adhesive nature, and the epidermis (the outermost layer of skin) begins to show the effects of this natural process. Certain activities and factors accelerate the production of wrinkles, and people who succumb themselves to these acts and environments are more likely to develop wrinkles at a younger age. These include the following:

  • Smoking
  • Prolonged sun exposure
  • Heredity and genetics
  • Pollution
  • Use of tanning beds
  • Engaging in activities that expose the skin to the sun for long periods of time

One easy way to prevent wrinkle formation is to protect one’s skin when outside in the sun. Always use sunscreen and try to shade yourself, particularly the face, whenever possible. Also, avoid using tanning beds and smoking. Fortunately, for those who have already developed wrinkles, there are procedures available to remove these deformities from your skin.
