Patients of All Ages
As people age, their bodies are shaped by a cocktail of genetics, experiences, and environmental exposure. This is a natural and unavoidable process, but that does not mean that there is nothing that can be done about it. Though some people embrace the changes that they see in their features, others develop insecurities because of them. More troubling than this personal and often private dissatisfaction, however, is the reality that there are many social prejudices against those who exhibit signs of aging. This may translate into lower wages, lost opportunities, and even social difficulties.
But plastic surgery is not reserved solely for those who are feeling the pressures of time. Patients of all ages choose both surgical and nonsurgical options to address their own personal concerns or to resolve the adverse effects of an accident or illness that has affected their appearance. Contact Austin facial plastic surgeon Dr. Apostolakis at 512-329-8989 to speak with a skilled and experienced practitioner of cosmetic surgery who can counsel you about what measures may be appropriate.
Patient Age Statistics
There is no question that the majority of plastic surgery patients are old enough to have encountered overt signs of aging, but there are a not insignificant number of younger patients, including minors, who undergo cosmetic procedures each year. In a report compiled by the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery regarding patient age in 2008, we find the following distribution of patients:
- Ages 65 + — 6% (634,667 procedures)
- Ages 51-64 – 26% (Approximately 2,700,000 procedures)
- Ages 35-50 – 45% (Approximately 4,600,000 procedures)
- Ages 19-34 – 22% (Approximately 2,200,000 procedures)
- Ages 18 and under – (160,283 procedures)
