Oxygen and Your Skin

After the first 20 to 30 years of a person’s life, his or her skin may look darker, have an increased number of wrinkles, and feel and appear dry. The aging process becomes faster with increased exposure to direct sunlight, smoking, poor diet, pollutants, and decreased oxygen under the skin. And the better care someone has for his or her skin by staying clear from these elements and conditions, the better he or she will look now and until his or her golden years.

Oxygen helps produce the elastin and collagen that is found in healthy skin. It is for this reason that oxygen is required for healthy skin. As people get older, the amount of nutrients and oxygen getting to the skin begins to decrease. This is due to decreased oxygen circulation that occurs from capillary deterioration. Overtime the skin begins to dehydrate, prolonging the time it would take to heal physical damages such as bruises, burns, and wounds.

Not everybody knows that people breathe through their skin. It may be a small amount, but this small amount can be the difference between older and younger looking skin. Those who experience high levels of stress and use a high volume of make-up keep the skin from absorbing as much oxygen as it should. Without being able to absorb oxygen, the skin will dry and wrinkle.
