Otoplasty

One of the most noticeable features of a person is his or her ears. Protruding ears may also get more attention than they deserve. When a person is uncomfortable with his or her protruding ears, a physician may recommend an otoplastic procedure. Otoplasty is ear surgery and is a cosmetic procedure that usually centers on reducing the protrusion of the ears.

Many parents consider otoplasty procedures for their children in order to reduce insecurities brought on by teasing. Of course, adults looking for a more defined face may also benefit from this surgery. An otoplastic procedure can also be combined with other cosmetic procedures to produce overall symmetry of the face.

The Consultation

During an otoplastic consultation, your physician will first check on the ears to make sure that there will be no potential difficulties during surgery. He or she will also discuss the corrective possibilities and listen to the patient’s needs. Your physician will then review your medical history and discuss the details of the procedure.

The Procedure

Physicians usually administer both a local and a general anesthetic in combination with a sedative. Once the patient is calmed and asleep, an incision is made in the fold behind the ear. The cartilage and skin that make up the fold is then removed and disposed of. The cartilage can then be trimmed in order to achieve more shapely looking ears. The ear is then pinned back and fitted with sutures. The procedure usually lasts about 2 hours.
