Narrowing the Nostrils

It is no coincidence that rhinoplasty (nose surgery) is one of the most asked for surgeries in the United States. You may not know it, but many of us focus on the nose when we speak with someone, mostly because it is in the center of the face. The size and placement of the nose also serves as a great reference to the others parts of the face.

Many patients concentrate on fixing only the arch of the nose, but a physician may also suggest an alar base resection to narrow the nostrils. The alar base is the portion of fibrofatty tissue between the underside of the nose and the sides of the nostrils. In an alar base resection, a physician reduces the circumference of the nostrils by removing some of the tissue on the sides of the alar base.

Some patients may not be looking for an alar base resection, but may instead be looking for an alar base repair to fix their uneven alar base. In many cases, the physician may reduce one size of the alar base to even it.

Postoperative Attention

After the surgery, patients will take an antibiotic three times a day. Patients will also be asked to make an appointment to ensure the success of the procedure and to ensure that postoperative care is being taken. The time sutures are removed will depend on how the incision is healing.
