Microdermabrasion
Microdermabrasion has become an increasingly common way to enhance your face. Some people consider microdermabrasion to be an “instant facial” that you can have done during your lunch since it is quick and nonsurgical. Also, this facial resurfacing technique has the added benefit of usually being more affordable than many other facial enhancement techniques.
How Skin Resurfacing Works
The skin is a many-layered organ. Microdermabrasion improves the skin’s appearance by buffing away the top layer of skin, which is often the source of fine wrinkles and other skin blemishes. The process polishes off this layer of imperfections, causing the body to generate new, healthy, and unblemished skin cells. This new layer of skin is what gives your face a youthful glow after undergoing microdermabrasion.
Tools of Microdermabrasion
Because skin resurfacing can be done at home with a special kit and at the doctor’s office with professional tools, there are a number of ways to buff your skin, including:
- High pressure crystal flow
- Diamond-tipped wands
- Specialized vacuums to remove dead and buffed-away skin cells
- Crystal cream foam (for at-home abrasion)
Aftereffects of Microdermabrasion
The wonderful thing about microdermabrasion is that you can choose exactly what area of skin you want to be polished. Therefore, you can test a small area of skin with microdermabrasion to see how your body reacts to buffing.
Typically, the process causes slight swelling and redness that is similar to mild sunburn. These effects last a few hours to up to two days. While less intense at-home microdermabrasion kits are convenient, the results generally do not last as long as microdermabrasion performed in a medical office by a skincare expert.
