Mentoplasty Procedures
Many people consider the most beautiful faces to be well-proportioned and symmetrical. The lower portion of the face is important to attaining this symmetry. Aesthetically speaking, many believe that the most important feature of the lower face is the chin.
If a person has a very large chin, it may visually dominate not only the lower face, but the entire face. A very small chin can create a similarly distracting effect. In some cases, a very small chin or “weak” chin can affect the overall appearance of the mouth and neck.
Mentoplasty is a kind of procedure that increases or decreases the size of a person’s chin, or reshapes its overall appearance. Of course, this kind of procedure will have an effect on the rest of the face as well. For example, when the size of the chin is changed, the nose may appear larger or smaller in contrast. Some people choose to complement mentoplasty with rhinoplasty, or surgery of the nose, to maintain vertical symmetry of the face.
To assist those with a bigger chin than desired, a physician may restructure the chin by surgically removing some of the bone of the chin. This can be used to reduce chins that are either too wide or too long. Patients who would like to see themselves with a more pronounced chin will more than likely receive a chin implant to enhance their lower face.
Full recovery time for this procedure may be a few weeks. The results themselves will be visible within the first six to eight weeks.
