Hyaluronic Acid Hype
With so many nonsurgical procedures for ridding yourself of wrinkles becoming available, it can be difficult to understand all of your options. Smoothing out your wrinkles can make you look younger and brighter, but you do not want to stress out about which method you should use.
Biology of Hyaluronic Acids
Hyaluronic acids such as Restylane, Juvederm, and Perlane are some of the most common types of hyaluronics available. However, the more important question is: What are hyalurons? Hyaluronans are actually molecules that are found in your body naturally. They can be found in the extracellular matrix, or the space between the outside of your cells.
Therefore, it should come as no surprise that hyaluronans have been successful in filling out wrinkles—they naturally pack and firm the space between your cells.
Types of Cosmetic Hyalurons
There are three popular types of hyalurons used today:
- Restylane – which is especially good for the area around the eyes, nose, and mouth
- Juvederm – which is helpful for nose, mouth, eyebrows, eyes, and lips
- Perlane – which contains no animal by-products, meaning low risk of allergic reactions
In 2003, the FDA began approving the usage of hyaluronic acids for cosmetic practices. It can be injected into areas for wrinkle erasing. The acids work by adding volume to the place where they were injected, and the results can last for about six months.
