History of Plastic Surgery
People living in the modern world are often very impressed with the many things that human beings have achieved and the extent of humanity’s technology and capabilities. Our species has even been able to overcome gravity and leave Earth, making our accomplishments something to be very proud of.
But while people are rightly impressed with humanity’s modern feats and capabilities, most people are rather unaware of what humans have achieved in the past. Going back thousands of years, humans were already doing some of the things people do know, even though people those things could not have been so far back in time. One of these things is plastic surgery.
Plastic surgery has a very long history. Many historians believe that as far back as 4000 years ago, people in what is not called India were already conducting plastic surgery. And, around 2600-2800 years ago, knowledge about plastic surgery techniques spread west, from what is now called India to what is now called the Middle East.
Furthermore, several hundred years, even Romans were performing simple types of plastic surgery, such as on the ears. Knowledge had spread west to Rome from the Arabs.
After the Roman Empire fell, knowledge of plastic surgery was likely lost, at least in Europe. As Europe went into the Dark Ages, much knowledge was destroyed in wars, and such ignorance continued into the Middle Ages. In Europe, it was not until the Renaissance that knowledge of plastic surgery began to be revived in Europe into what it is today.
