Common Myths about Cosmetic Surgery

Will all of the rumors and conflicting information about plastic surgery traveling by word of mouth and the internet, researching the subject can get confusing. For the convenience of our patients, we have assembled some of the most commonly repeated myths, along with the facts.

  • You should shop for the best price: Myth. A plastic surgeon with very low prices must be cutting costs somewhere; otherwise he or she would be out of business. Ask yourself what is being cut to keep prices low: patient comfort, surgical skill, or safety? Remember, there is no law forbidding any surgeon to advertise as a cosmetic specialist, even without special training.
  • Only rich people can have cosmetic surgery: Myth. As the necessary technology has become more accessible and more doctors have begun to study cosmetic surgery, the price of most procedures has been going down. Many more people can afford these procedures now than a generation or two ago.
  • You can always tell who has had a facelift: Myth. A well done facelift will leave discreet scars and look perfectly natural. This once again highlights the importance of finding the most qualified, professional cosmetic surgeon you can.
  • Cosmetic surgery is only for women: Myth. It is becoming more and more common for men to undergo procedures such as facelifts, Botox injections, and chin implants. Many men report that these procedures have boosted their self-confidence and may have even helped their careers.
