Animal-Based vs. Human-Based Injectables

If you choose to get a facial injection to firm up your wrinkles and fill in your sagging skin, you have a number of options open to you. As our medical technology is ever moving forward, doctors and researchers have developed multiple ways for you to regain a youthful appearance. Different types of injectables can contain animal-based ingredients or human-based ingredients, each with its own pros and cons.

Animal-Based Injectables

Animal-based injections are collagen shots that plump up your skin, filling in wrinkles. Typically, scientists harvest either bovine or porcine collagen from the animal’s skin or their own supply of collagen. This type of injection is beneficial because it can be immediate and last up to six months.

However, the one major problem with animal-based injections is that they can cause allergic reactions in some people. Some types of animal-based shots require the potential client to have a skin test to see if they will indeed react to the substance in a negative way.

Human-Based Injectables

Human-derived collagen comes from either donors or laboratory-generated supplies. Because it is a human matrix form of collagen, your body will more than likely not reject the substance or have an allergic reaction to the shot. However, you may still experience some bruising at the site of the injection.

Although human collagen is less prone to giving people allergic reactions, it does not always work as well as the animal injections. For some types of these shots, a client needs multiple treatments to achieve the same effect as a single animal-based injectable. Also, some do not last as long as the bovine and porcine shots.
