American Board of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery

Any type of surgery requires high standards. Surgeons modify the human body in extreme ways. They cut it up, move parts around, and change the orientation of things. They literally have people’s lives in their hands.

As a result, it is not surprising that people want to be assured that their surgeons are perfectly qualified to perform surgery. To ensure that surgeons perform with the highest standards, a number of bodies have been established. One such body is the America Board of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (ABFPRS).

The ABFPRS has four main objectives. Officially, they are:

  • To establish qualifications for facial and plastic surgeons.
  • To determine which surgeons meet those qualifications.
  • To conduct exams of such surgeons and issue certificates when they meet the requirements.
  • To help broaden graduate school and training for facial plastic surgeons.

In effect, the Board provides for the “education, qualification, training, review, and certification” of facial surgeons.

In the United States, having a Board certificate is important. Almost all working surgeons are certified, and those who are not certified usually have lost their certificate because of malpractice. Assuming that the Board’s standards are high and that they are maintained, the Board is good for consumers of facial surgery. It ensures that the surgeons that people go to can be trusted.
